The Hammond 1 found in this collection came in spring of 2021 from the New York city area.

The Hammond 1 was one of the first major companies to compete against Remington’s production of the Sholes and Glidden and the Caligraph. The Hammond was first patented in 1880 and production started in 1881. The company had great success in their ventures, the Hammond 1 used a split type shuttle consisting of two halves. These are much more fragile than the single piece design used later on. many Hammond’s that used split shuttles were sent back to the factory and remodeled to use the single piece element later on. The paper rest support on early Hammond’s of the model 1 and 2 was also of a 3-part design and was very fragile, this is also commonly broken. The internals of all the Hammond’s is fairly similar in design. But the model 1 pictured above had the beautiful wood body covers. Much like the keystone, and Chicago, the type element would rotate or index into place, and a hammer would strike the paper against the type element to make the impression. The model 1 pictured above is one of very few machines made that used a 2 bank keyboard, the machine used a double shift, for figures and capitals. Other variations of the model 1 used a 3 bank keyboard, like the model 1 universal. which can also be seen on this website. It should be noted that the split shuttle elements from the model 1 and model 1 universal will both physically interchange into both machines, but the characters are not in the same locations, so while they physically fit, they are NOT interchangeable. Additional type elements could have been ordered from the factory to allow for different type styles or languages to be used on the same machine. Some of these include script, italics, bold, double gothic, fraktur, or for other languages Hebrew, French, Bulgarian, German, Spanish, and many others.
