This Caligraph 2 joined the collection in fall of 2013,

The Caligraph made by the American Writing Machine Company was one of the first major competitors against the Sholes and Glidden, introduced in 1880 with a single case, capitals only keyboard with 2 space bars with one on each side of the frame, The company wasted no time in developing the model 2 introduced in 1882 which was a full keyboard machine with both upper case and lowercase. The Caligraph used a mainspring that ran the full length of the machine to advance the carriage, this is not uncommon to be broken on machines found today. The spring is under a great amount of tension constantly and the past 100+ years have not been kind to many. The key levers of the Caligraph are made to run the full length of the machine as well and are of an extra-long design, allowing for the typist to print with less effort. These key levers were made of wood and are occasionally also found broken. Decals on the front cover of the machine usually show a great amount of wear, as that cover would often serve to be used as an arm rest when typing. When typing the print would type on the bottom of the platen making this machine require a hinged carriage to allow the typist to see what they had just typed.
